Cloud Storage vs Local Storage | FairfieldMoms

We have all gotten that message that says we’re running out of storage, but it can be frustrating to figure out how and why this is happening. See the break down below on how to check and manage your storage!

Cloud storage

Cloud storage is a server farm, likely based in North Carolina, that stores all your pictures and videos that you have taken on your iPhone. By using the cloud, you get access to your photos on all your Apple devices and a peace of mind that they are backed up in case something were to happen to your phone. You also pay Apple monthly for this service.

To check how your Cloud storage is being used from your iPhone go to:

  1. Settings
  2. Your Name at the top
  3. iCloud
  4. Manage Storage

Local Storage

On the other hand, Local Storage refers to the capacity of the iPhone you purchase (64GB, 128GB etc). This houses your music, apps, text messages, books & podcasts.

To check how your Local Storage is being allocated go to:

  1. Settings
  2. General
  3. iPhone Storage

Cloud Storage Pro Tip:

If multiple family members are paying for cloud storage, pick the family member that has the largest plan to share and consolidate storage plans.

Local Storage Pro tip:

If your Local Storage is being used up by Photos, go to iCloud settings to Optimize Photo Storage.
