For kids, the holiday season can be all about receiving—gifts of course, but also endless events catered to them (meeting the big guy in red, decorating gingerbread houses, etc.). If you want to encourage them to think of others and give instead of only receive, here are 5 ways to give back to others this holiday season.
Create a Thank You for Delivery People
This time of year, deliveries are coming fast and furious. Plus, you might have extra people helping get your home ready for the holidays. Show your gratitude and get your kids involved by putting out snacks, drinks and a thank you note. Bigger kids can choose the snacks and write the note, and little ones can draw pictures.
Volunteer with Your Kids
Local charities, shelters, food banks and religious institutions have so many opportunities for families to give back. Reach out and ask how you can help in a way that’s age appropriate for everyone.
Initiate a Food Drive at School
With food insecurity levels spiking nationwide, spearhead a food and hygiene essentials drive. The key is to also talk to your kids about why you’re doing it, and getting them involved in choosing the items, packing and sorting.
Donate Toys to a Shelter
Going through your kids toys and talking about kids who don’t have access to toys is a great way to match the message to your mission.
Visit with Homeless Animals
There are age restrictions for some in-person volunteer activities, but cuddling cats, reading to dogs and just saying hello to homeless animals is a great way to give back. If you can, consider fostering as this time of year is always busy for shelters.
